In Zen Buddhism, "nothingness" is different from the nothingness that exists and does not exist.
Beyond the opposites lies "nothingness."
Think about the words pain and pleasure.
It is because we know pain that we can appreciate the value of pleasure, and it is because we know pleasure that we can appreciate the value of pain.
"Nothingness" is realizing that something cannot be seen without either one.
